The World Fisheries Day (WFD) is an outcome of the Conference of Fishery Ministers that was organized by FAO in Montréal Canada in 1999. The Ministers' meeting was organized tantamount a side event of the World CSOs conference in the same city.

The CSOs proposed and passed the declaration to commemorate the World Fisheries Day on 21st November of each year.

The idea was also presented to the Ministers' Conference who approved it and called up on participating Governments to consent it as an International day. From that time the day has been being celebrated annually on November 21 st worldwide.

On this day, indigenous fisher communities all over the world celebrate fisheries as a resource base that natures and nourishes millions of people around the world and utilize the forum to show the world that over 70 per cent of the world's fisheries are fully exploited or extinct is worrying.
