THE 3rd REGIONAL LEVEL WORLD FISHERIES DAY COMEMORATIONS Print

PRESS RELEASE

THE 3rd REGIONAL LEVEL WORLD FISHERIES DAY COMEMORATIONS
IN KALANGALA, SESSE ISLANDS 15-19.12.2008

Theme: “Prosperity for All through Government and Fishers' Responsiveness in Fishery Resources Management”
Guest of Honour: H.E. Y.K. Museveni, the President of the Republic of Uganda.

1.0 The Concept

The World Fisheries Day (WFD) is an outcome of the Conference of Fishery Ministers that was organized by FAO in Montréal Canada in 1999. The Ministers' meeting was organized tantamount a side event of the World CSOs conference in the same city. The CSOs proposed and passed the declaration to commemorate the World Fisheries Day on 21st November of each year.

The idea was also presented to the Ministers' Conference who approved it and called up on participating Governments to consent it as an International day. From that time the day has been being celebrated annually on November 21 st worldwide.

On this day, indigenous fisher communities all over the world celebrate fisheries as a resource base that natures and nourishes millions of people around the world and utilize the forum to show the world that over 70 per cent of the world's fisheries are fully exploited or extinct is worrying.

2.0 The theme of this year's WFD, 2008 is; “Prosperity for All through Government and Fishers' Responsiveness in Fishery Resources Management”

3.0 The Goal

The situation in the Fish industry in the Lake region, calls up on the public, NGOs, development partners and policy makers in public, civil society and private sectors that there is an urgent need to take immediate action, if we need to shape bright future of this generation. Therefore the goal of this year's event shall be to profile strategies workable plans for the sustainability of the Lake and fishing industry as a whole.

The overall purpose of the 3 rd World Fisheries Day (WFD) in East Africa is, therefore; to advocate for the need to mainstream fisher peoples' livelihoods and issues attendant thereto into national consciousness across the region by voicing the challenges faced by these communities, creating a forum for them, their partners and the public to share experiences, cultures, histories and build a common understanding and appreciation of each other.

New Title of KADETFU Print

Dear Colleagues and Partners,

According to the new law (the NGO act 2004), the exisiting organisations have to apply for the Certificate of Compliance (CoC). I am glad to inform you that the Government has granted us a Certificate of Compliance no. 1596 of 13th March 2006 and has consented us to operate in the whole of Tanzania mainland. However, due to that effect, the title of ouir organisation has changed a bit with exclusion of the word "Trust", but the acronym remains the same i.e. "KADETFU".

Therefore the New name of  the Organisation is "KAGERA DEVELOPMENT AND CREDIT REVOLVING FUND" in short "KADETFU". We are glad to obtain the certificate of compliance  but regrets for any inconvenience that might be caused by these changes.

With kind regards

Yusto P. Muchuruza
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
